Schubert - Winterreise
Catalog Number: BIS253
The great Finnish bass Martti Talvela and pianist Ralf Gothóni journey through Schubert's Winterreise – a bleak, haunting epilogue to youthful love, sung by one of the most commanding voices of the 20th century.
Four years after Die schöne Müllerin, and a year before his death, Schubert returned to the poetry of Wilhelm Müller for Winterreise, a cycle of 24 songs that forms a gripping epilogue to youthful love. Where the miller's apprentice finds comfort in his friend the brook, the wanderer of Winterreise trudges through a frozen, deserted landscape, haunted by memories and feverish dreams, with no rest in sight but death. Schubert's friends recalled how much the work had demanded of him; he composed it in two stages during 1827. Martti Talvela – the Finnish bass celebrated at Bayreuth, the Met and the Bolshoi, and a renowned Lieder singer – is partnered by pianist Ralf Gothóni.
