Sebastian Fagerlund ranks among Finland's most compelling contemporary voices, a composer whose music marries bold imagination with real emotional force. This BIS release gathers four chamber and ensemble works that trace the threads running through his output. The title piece, Beneath for string orchestra, hovers intriguingly between concerto and ensemble writing, its solo violin rising from the texture as a 'first among equals' before melting back into it. Remain, a piano trio completed on the very day Russia invaded Ukraine, is among his most personal statements, weaving quotations from Ravel, Bach and Brahms into a moving tribute dedicated to the Ukrainian people. Materie, written for the Kuopio Violin Competition, pairs dazzling virtuosity with expressive depth, while Finale Stilla for violin and piano drifts from quiet reflection to fierce energy and back to an eerie stillness. Presiding over it all is Malin Broman, who appears as soloist, joins the Kungsbacka Piano Trio and conducts the Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra, lending the album a rare unity of vision.
