Sibelius composed his piano trios in a remarkable burst of activity in the late 1880s. The Piano Trio 'Korpo' in D major JS209 (1887) is the most ambitious work on this disc, its three movements spanning from a vigorous Allegro moderato to a multi-section Fantasia of considerable expressive range, and concluding with a lively Finale. The Piano Trio 'Lovisa' in C major JS208 (1888) is lighter and more compact, its three-movement structure giving it the feel of an accomplished student piece. Shorter trio pieces complete the programme, including two works performed in completions by Jaakko Kuusisto. The performers are violinist Jaakko Kuusisto, cellist Marko Yltinen and pianist Folke Gräsbeck, playing on superb historical instruments including Matteo Goffriller violins.
