Sibelius - Complete Youth Production for Violin and Piano, Vol.2
Catalog Number: BIS1023
Early Sibelius for violin and piano—by turns salon-poised, ardently virtuosic, and quietly Nordic—culminating in the youthful F-major Sonata and rare solo violin miniatures, brought to life with clarity and character.
Sibelius - Complete Youth Production for Violin and Piano, Vol.2
These pieces open a window onto Sibelius before the public masterworks: a young composer still testing forms, colours, and violinistic bravura, yet already drawn to a distinct blend of lyric intimacy and restless drama. The Helsinki works move between urbane charm and concert-bright writing—the E-major Suite slipping from a lyrical waltz into a finale of stately dance—while the unfinished sketches from Berlin and Vienna hint at a more weighty, purposeful voice, with darker pedal points and modal inflections. At the centre stands the youthful Sonata in F major, whose shifting moods—melancholy song, folk-tinged dance, and headlong energy—suggest Sibelius’s growing sense of narrative and atmosphere. The recital is rounded out by terse solo pieces, from an etude of athletic runs to later pages where the familiar Sibelian harmonic glow briefly surfaces. Kuusisto and Gräsbeck shape this rare repertory with a natural, searching musicianship that lets the music’s invention speak without overstatement.
