This generous programme draws on the acclaimed Sibelius recordings made for BIS by the Lahti Symphony Orchestra and Osmo Vänskä. Alongside favourites such as Finlandia, The Swan of Tuonela with its haunting cor anglais solo, Valse triste and music from Pelléas et Mélisande, the disc includes lesser-known pieces: the original version of the Alla marcia from the Karelia music, Spring Song, the string melodrama The Countess's Portrait – published only in 1994 – and a scene from the incidental music to The Tempest. Dong-Suk Kang is the soloist in the pastoral Suite for Violin and String Orchestra, a late work that Sibelius never heard performed. The programme ends with Tapiola, his last great tone poem and a dark, elemental evocation of the Nordic forest.
