Sibelius - Symphonies 1 & 4
Catalog Number: BIS861
A journey from youthful ardour to austere introspection: these two symphonies trace Sibelius’s path from romantic breadth to concentrated, elemental expression, shaped with clarity and inner intensity.
Classica-Répertoire 10; Penguin Guide 3 stars.
Sibelius’s First Symphony unfolds with expansive lyricism and dramatic sweep, its clarinet “motto” germinating a work of organic unity and fervent rhetoric. Romantic in gesture yet already marked by structural concentration, it balances sweeping orchestral climaxes with moments of pastoral calm and tragic restraint. The Lahti Symphony Orchestra shapes this early symphonic statement with breadth and clarity, revealing both its Tchaikovskian warmth and the distinctive voice emerging beneath the surface.
In the Fourth Symphony, the landscape changes profoundly. Here the language is stripped to essentials: terse motifs, stark harmonies, and the haunting tension of the tritone create music of searching inwardness. Chamber-like in its transparency, yet vast in implication, the symphony moves from brooding introspection to a conclusion of grave resignation. Under Osmo Vänskä’s direction, the performance captures this uncompromising vision with restraint, intensity, and luminous precision.
