This volume opens a rare window onto Sibelius’s creative youth, gathering piano works composed between his final school year in Hämeenlinna and his early studies in Helsinki. Far from being mere exercises, these pieces reveal a young musician testing forms, colours, and character with striking assurance. Dance rhythms—mazurka, waltz, polonaise—coexist with lyrical miniatures and Beethoven-inspired variations, while moments of Nordic melancholy and modal inflection foreshadow the mature composer’s voice.
The expansive Trånaden (Yearning), a fantasy with recitation to poetry by Erik Johan Stagnelius, stands at the emotional centre: ceremonial, atmospheric, and already rich in orchestral imagination.
