Skalkottas - Chamber Concertos
Catalog Number: BIS1244
A Greek modernist who studied under Schoenberg yet drew deeply on his homeland's music, Skalkottas remains one of the twentieth century's great originals. Here his Concerto for Two Violins – a world première recording – joins vivid chamber works for winds and piano.
Nikos Skalkottas (1904–1949) absorbed the radical language of Schoenberg's Berlin circle before returning to Greece, where he fused twelve-note technique with the folk and rembetiko traditions of his native country. The centrepiece of this release is his expansive Concerto for Two Violins, left unorchestrated at his death and heard here in its original version for two violins and two pianos – its central movement spinning dazzling variations on a rembetiko theme. Around it are gathered Skalkottas's witty and inventive works for wind instruments and piano: the Quartet for oboe, trumpet, bassoon and piano, concertinos for oboe and for trumpet, a Tango and Fox-trot, and the substantial Sonata Concertante for bassoon and piano. The performers include violinists Eiichi Chijiiwa and Nina Zymbalist, pianists Nikolaos Samaltanos and Christophe Sirodeau, oboist Alexeï Ogrintchouk, trumpeter Eric Aubier and bassoonist Marc Trenel.
