Nikos Skalkottas (1904–49) developed a highly personal approach to twelve-tone composition, and his chamber music shows this at its most concentrated. The String Quartet No.1 (1928) is an early mature work of considerable formal sophistication. The Ten Sketches for String Quartet (Zehn Stücke, c.1940) are compact yet richly varied pieces spanning a wide range of moods and textures — from Sinfonia and Passacaglia to Concertino and Suita. The String Trio No.2 (1935) is in three movements of compact intensity. Gero Dimos (1949) is a late work of characteristic ingenuity. The New Hellenic Quartet — Georgios Demertzis, Dimitrios Chandrakis and colleagues — bring committed advocacy to this underperformed repertoire.
