Nikos Skalkottas remains one of the most remarkable rediscoveries in twentieth-century music — a Greek composer who studied with Schoenberg in Berlin yet chose his own path, forging a personal dodecaphonic language of striking originality that went largely unheard during his lifetime. This disc traces the full arc of his writing for violin and piano, from the 1925 Sonata for Solo Violin — his first decisively mature work, rooted in Bach's formal rigour yet already animated by a restless inner serial logic — through the four Sonatinas to a group of vivid short pieces. The Berlin Sonatinas of 1929 crackle with the energy of their moment: jazz rhythms surface alongside folk-inflected melody, and the serial writing bends toward the warm expressivity of Alban Berg. The Athens Sonatinas of 1935, composed after years of silence, are leaner and more concentrated, their austere forms charged with quiet drama and an almost contemplative serenity. Among the shorter pieces, the March of the Little Soldiers carries a wry anti-militarist edge, while the Nocturne breathes with an ecstatic, almost hymn-like radiance. Georgios Demertzis and Maria Asteriadou play with luminous conviction, making the strongest possible case for a composer who deserves a permanent place in the concert repertoire.
