Sophia Lisovskaya plays Scriabin
Catalog Number: BIS1142
Sophia Lisovskaya traces the extraordinary journey of Alexander Scriabin, from Chopinesque early preludes and études to the visionary late style of Vers la flamme – a richly varied portrait of one of music's most original figures.
The Russian composer and virtuoso pianist Alexander Scriabin (1872–1915) wrote mainly for the piano, yet his experiments in harmony and rhythm place him alongside Schoenberg, Bartók, Stravinsky and Debussy. Driven by a mystical, Theosophy-inspired philosophy, he believed that music could transform the world. This recital spans his whole career, from the Andante, Op.2 No.1, of 1887 and a generous selection of the Twenty-four Preludes, Op.11, via the Fourth Sonata and the Deux poèmes, Op.32, to late pieces such as the Op.65 Études and the incandescent Vers la flamme, Op.72, from 1914. Pianist Sophia Lisovskaya guides the listener through this fascinating evolution.
