Tcherepnin – Complete Symphonies & Piano Concertos
Alexander Nikolayevich Tcherepnin (1899–1977) is a fascinating figure who bridged East and West across a lifetime of creative exploration. Born in St Petersburg, he spent decades in Paris and later Chicago, absorbing influences from Stravinsky and Prokofiev while developing a distinctly personal language. Symphony No.1 in E major Op.42 (1927) is a vigorous, four-movement work of neo-classical energy. Piano Concerto No.5 Op.96 (1963), the most recent work here, shows his mature style at its most refined. Symphony No.2 in E flat major Op.77 (1947–51) completes the set, a substantial four-movement symphony of lyrical intensity. Together these three works offer a comprehensive portrait of Tcherepnin's orchestral achievement.
