The Golden Age of the Cornet
Catalog Number: BIS1598
The Golden Age of the Cornet: virtuoso showpieces by Clarke, Höhne, Grieg, Code, Hoch, Dinicu, Simon, Bull and Hartmann — a celebration of the instrument that, as Herbert Lincoln Clarke put it, 'belongs to the angels'.

Herbert Lincoln Clarke famously declared 'The trumpet is an instrument of sin while the cornet belongs to the angels', and this disc makes the case for the cornet's unique combination of lyrical warmth and brilliant virtuosity. Clarke himself opens the programme with his showpiece The Debutante. Carl Höhne's Slavische Fantasie and Theodor Hoch's Nordische Fantasie Op.20 show the instrument's expressive range, while Grieg's Ved Rondane (arr. Westby) and Ole Bull's Sæterjentens søndag bring a distinctly Nordic character. Percy Code's Zelda, Grigoras Dinicu's Hora staccato and Frank Simon's Willow Echoes add further colour and brilliance to a programme that stands as an irresistible showcase for an often-overlooked solo voice.
