The second volume of chamber music in BIS's comprehensive Sibelius Edition presents the young composer's output from the 1870s to 1891, tracing his development from early student pieces to more ambitious works. Many recordings here are world premières, including duos for two violins, string trios and a selection of solo cello pieces. The centrepiece of the set is the substantial Piano Quintet in G minor JS159 (1890), a five-movement work in the late-Romantic tradition. The performers are drawn from the regular Sibelius Edition ensemble: violinist Jaakko Kuusisto, violinist Laura Vikman, cellists Taneli Turunen and Torleif Thedéen, and pianist Folke Gräsbeck.
