In his Apothéose de Lulli, François Couperin imagined Apollo persuading Lully and Corelli that a union of the French and Italian styles would bring about ‘the perfection of music’. This recording traces exactly that fusion: the abstract movements keep the structure and fugal writing of the Corellian sonata – enriched by a distinctly French harmony – while the dances and airs preserve the spirit and grace of Lully's court entertainments. The programme ranges from Couperin's L'Impériale (from Les Nations) to sonatas by Dollé, Leclair, Boismortier and Guignon. London Baroque – violinists Ingrid Seifert and Richard Gwilt, Charles Medlam on bass viol and Steven Devine at the harpsichord – plays throughout with idiomatic finesse and stylish flair.
