This album gathers a striking sequence of works that place the trombone at the heart of a winter landscape. Vivaldi’s Winter from The Four Seasons appears in a virtuoso guise, its shivering figures, skidding ice and roaring winds vividly reimagined for solo trombone and strings. Milhaud’s Concertino d’hiver, written for an Atlantic crossing, adds a bright, neoclassical shimmer, while Lars-Erik Larsson’s warmly melodic Concertino brings a touch of Swedish national romanticism. Telemann’s Concerto in C minor, originally for oboe, lends baroque poise and gravitas in its new alto-trombone incarnation. The programme culminates in Roland Pöntinen’s Blå vinter (Blue Winter), inspired by the uncanny blue light of Nordic dusk, where the instrument sings with an almost vocal intensity. Throughout, the soloist’s fearless virtuosity and expressive range are matched by the New Stockholm Chamber Orchestra’s agile, clear-textured support, creating a crisp yet glowing soundworld that captures winter in all its tension, stillness and radiance.
