Thirteen Drums
Catalog Number: BIS1303
Thirteen Drums: Japanese works for solo percussion and marimba — Sueyoshi, Ishii, Miyoshi, Kozakura, Ichiyanagi and Miki — performed by a Japanese percussionist who was inspired by the Kroumata Ensemble to study in Sweden.
This disc brings together six works for solo percussion and marimba by leading Japanese composers. Yasuo Sueyoshi's Mirage opens with atmospheric marimba writing. Maki Ishii's Thirteen Drums (the title work) is a commanding piece for solo percussion. Akira Miyoshi contributes Ripple for marimba. Hideki Kozakura's two-movement Johali and Toshi Ichiyanagi's Portrait of Forest for solo marimba extend the programme further. Minoru Miki's Time for marimba closes the disc. The performer, a Japanese marimba player who was so struck by the Kroumata Percussion Ensemble's performance in Tokyo that she immediately decided to study in Sweden, brings both technical mastery and deep understanding of this Japanese repertoire.
