Toward the Sea
Catalog Number: BIS650
A luminous journey for flute and harp, where French elegance, Romanian lyricism and Japanese stillness converge. From impressionist clarity to oceanic meditation, the music unfolds with poise, colour and quiet radiance.
Though written in the twentieth century, these works draw on the ancient kinship of flute and harp—an alliance of breath and resonance shaped by clarity, lightness and refined colour. The French lineage is felt in the supple elegance of Inghelbrecht’s Sonatina and the poised charm of Damase’s Sonata, whose idiomatic harp writing and wistful lyricism reveal an intimate understanding of the instrument’s voice. Lauber’s neo-antique dances balance contrapuntal richness with graceful transparency, while Petra-Basacopol’s Sonata infuses the texture with Romanian melodic inflections, its declamatory lines and folkloric echoes lending expressive freedom and contrast.
The programme culminates in Takemitsu’s Toward the Sea III, a meditation on water and space, where sustained flute tones and veiled harp sonorities evoke night, myth and the shimmer of the Atlantic horizon. Throughout, Robert Aitken and Erica Goodman shape the dialogue with sensitivity and tonal finesse, allowing the music’s shifting colours and atmospheres to emerge with natural eloquence.
