Geirr Tveitt (1908–1981) is one of Norway's most distinctive musical voices, rooted in the folk music of Hardanger yet always open to new influences. This disc presents three substantial works spanning his career. Piano Concerto No.1, Op.5 received its premiere with the Leipzig Radio Symphony Orchestra on 5 June 1931. It has a youthful, innocent character, opening with the piano alone without orchestral introduction and ending with the same quiet restraint. Its melodic voice is clearly shaped by folk music yet entirely its own. The Turtle sets a prose passage from John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath — the famous third chapter describing a turtle crossing a highway — for mezzo-soprano and orchestra. Tveitt wrote the demanding solo part for Kirsten Flagstad, who admired his exceptional talent but never performed the work. It received its world premiere only in 1994, with the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra under Ole Kristian Ruud, who also conducts this first recording. Piano Concerto No.4, 'Northern Lights' (Nordljos), Op.130, was premiered in Bergen in April 1949 and thereafter set aside for many years. Much of Tveitt's manuscript output perished in the catastrophic farm fire of 1970; this concerto was laboriously reconstructed from incomplete scores and divergent radio recordings. The result is one of Tveitt's most original creations — as overwhelming as the northern lights themselves in all their sparkling intensity. Sveinung Bjelland and Håkon Austbø are the piano soloists, Ingebjørg Kosmo is the mezzo-soprano, and the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra is conducted by Ole Kristian Ruud.
