Villa-Lobos - Complete Works for Solo Guitar
Catalog Number: BIS686
Villa-Lobos's complete works for solo guitar — Five Preludes, Twelve Etudes, Suite populaire brésilienne and Chôro No.1 — performed by Anders Miolin on a 10-string guitar.
Heitor Villa-Lobos (1882–1959) composed more than 1,500 works, yet his guitar music has become the most widely performed part of his output. The Twelve Etudes (1929), inspired by Andrés Segovia and long kept in manuscript before their 1953 publication, are both challenging technical exercises and compelling music — pioneering works calling for sounds never previously heard on the guitar. The Five Preludes (1940), his last guitar compositions, are among his most popular works, each supplied with a descriptive subtitle. The Suite populaire brésilienne presents Brazilian versions of European dances as a chôro group might have played them. Chôro No.1 is the best-known of all his guitar works. Anders Miolin plays a 10-string guitar, bringing both virtuosity and rare poetic quality.
