Stravinsky's The Firebird was composed in 1909–10 for Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, after the original choice of composer, Anatoly Lyadov, proved unable to take on the project. Combining the legends of the magical Firebird and the immortal sorcerer Koschei, the ballet became an instant success at its Paris premiere and launched Stravinsky's international career. Its glittering orchestration shows the influence of his teacher Rimsky-Korsakov, while the brutal, driving rhythms of the Infernal Dance point to the revolutionary composer to come. This live recording was made in 2025 at the Isarphilharmonie in Munich, with Sir Simon Rattle conducting the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, of which he has been Chief Conductor since 2023.
