To mark the 200th anniversary of Johann Strauss II's birth, the Munich Radio Orchestra under Patrick Hahn set out to paint a musical portrait of the ‘Waltz King’ – humorous, elegant and steeped in Viennese charm. Two centuries on, the Strauss name has lost none of its lustre, much like the composer's golden monument in Vienna's Stadtpark, which shows him just as the world remembers him: violin in hand, the radiant Waltz King. Although that title once belonged to his father as well, today it is the son with whom it is most closely associated. Built around the celebratory Revolutions-Marsch, the programme balances affectionate wit with real orchestral polish.
