The Japanese conductor Seiji Ozawa (1935-2024) led the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra in Munich on only two occasions, both of which made musical history. This release captures the second, a January 1990 concert at the Philharmonie im Gasteig, issued here on CD for the first time. The programme brings together two pillars of the symphonic repertoire: Beethoven's Fifth Symphony, with its celebrated journey from darkness to light, and Richard Strauss's expansive tone poem Ein Heldenleben. Ozawa's interpretations are as striking as they are unexpected - a document of one of the twentieth century's most admired conductors at work with a great orchestra.
