Ferdinand Hérold: Zampa ou La Fiancée de marbre
Catalog Number: BZ1065
A dashing pirate, a marble statue come to life, and a supernatural reckoning — Ferdinand Hérold's Zampa, "the French Don Giovanni", in its world-premiere recording. Erik Nielsen conducts the Munich Radio Orchestra in this landmark of French Romantic opera.
Palazzetto Bru Zane continues its rediscovery of French Romantic opera with the first complete recording of Ferdinand Hérold's Zampa, ou La Fiancée de marbre (1831). A tale of a swaggering pirate captain undone by a vengeful marble statue, the work helped invent le fantastique in French opera and earned a reputation as "the French Don Giovanni". Erik Nielsen leads the Münchner Rundfunkorchester and the Chor des Bayerischen Rundfunks, with a starry cast including Julien Henric, Hélène Carpentier and Cyrille Dubois. Recorded in Munich in 2025, this release restores a once-celebrated masterpiece to the catalogue.
