Realms offers an unusual perspective on Meredith Monk, the pioneering American artist best known for her wordless vocal music: here her instrumental writing takes centre stage. The Phaedra Ensemble performs three works — Stringsongs, Backlight and Realm Variations — that Monk conceives as a single arc inspired by the principle of Heaven, Earth and Human. Each unfolds as a distinct sonic landscape, with voices treated as instruments and instruments as voices. The result is a meditative, deeply atmospheric introduction to a singular musical world.
