Friedrich Schwindl: Symphonies
Catalog Number: C5558
In his day Friedrich Schwindl (1737-1786) was a much-loved violinist and composer - a 'favourite of the Sentimentalists'. Werner Ehrhardt and l'arte del mondo revive four of his elegant symphonies, including the pastoral D major, Op. 3 No. 2.
Friedrich Schwindl (1737-1786) was, in his lifetime, a celebrated violinist and composer whom Christian Friedrich Daniel Schubart praised as a favourite of the Empfindsamkeit - music that was not difficult, but flowing, tender and touched by a sweet melancholy. This album gathers his three symphonies Op. 10 (in C, E flat and G major), composed during his years at the court of Baden-Durlach in Karlsruhe and published in the Netherlands in 1782, alongside the descriptive Symphony in D major, Op. 3 No. 2 'La Pastorale'. Werner Ehrhardt, a pioneer of the German period-instrument movement and founder of Concerto Koln, directs his orchestra l'arte del mondo in these graceful, long-neglected works, restoring a once-popular voice of the galant and Sentimental style to the concert hall.
