Hans Winterberg (1901–91) grew up in Prague, studied with Zemlinsky and Fidelio F. Finke, and because of his Jewish ancestry was deported to Theresienstadt in January 1945. He survived, settled in Bavaria and enjoyed real success there in the early 1950s, only to be sidelined by the post-war avant-garde – and, after his death, hidden from view when his manuscripts were sold on condition that they stay closed to the public until 2031. Composed mostly between 1943 and 1945, while he lived under forced labour without any prospect of performance, the Second Symphony is a classic ‘through darkness to light’ work: a threatening, almost demonic opening gives way to a magical pastoral intermezzo and a finale that ends in joyful fanfares. The Second Piano Concerto (1949–51) takes the form of five fantasies and a ‘fantastic fugue’ on an original theme – colourful character studies ranging from lyrical buoyancy to a dirge, a scherzo and a boisterous quick march. Jonathan Powell is the soloist, with the Deutsche Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz under Roland Kluttig.
