Kurt Weill: Love Life
Catalog Number: C5550
A time-traveling vaudeville of American marriage: Weill’s kaleidoscopic score—by turns tender, acerbic, and sly—blooms in Opera North’s concert staging, where orchestral color and crystalline text lay bare the work’s beating, bittersweet heart.
This first complete recording of Kurt Weill and Alan Jay Lerner’s Love Life captures the show’s daring form—a “vaudeville in two parts” where commentary acts frame the ageless Coopers as they negotiate the tightrope between love and life from 1791 to the mid-20th century. The score’s vivid pastiche—madrigal to blues, soft-shoe to foxtrot—serves a pointed study of marriage under industrial and social change, its lyric bite offset by the lingering tenderness of “Here I’ll Stay” and the Hobo’s plain-spoken “Love Song.” Opera North’s concert staging places a 36-piece orchestra onstage, sharpening Weill’s orchestral palette while letting text and rhythm speak with Brecht-tinged clarity. Led by James Holmes, whose long Weill stewardship informs the pacing and color, the performance draws a strong arc from glittering illusion to sober resolve. Recorded live at Leeds Grand Theatre in January 2025 and performed from Joel Galand’s critical edition, it restores the show’s architecture and reinstates numbers long unheard, allowing Love Life to sound both of its era and unmistakably of ours.
