Zygmunt Noskowski (1846–1909) was Poland's leading exponent of modern symphonic music for much of the 19th century, yet his chamber works fell into obscurity almost immediately after his death. This disc brings together three of them: the Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Viotti (1873), written in Berlin as a tribute to his teacher Friedrich Kiel; the four-movement String Quartet No. 2 in E major (1879–83), whose spare, dark Andante doloroso evokes late Beethoven; and the Humorous Quartet (ca. 1887), a delightful contrapuntal joke in which each player performs a different dance — Mozart, mazur, operetta aria, polonaise — that somehow coalesces into a harmonious whole. The award-winning Meccore String Quartet, recorded at Polish Radio in Warsaw in early 2025, makes a compelling case for this overlooked corner of Polish Romanticism.
