This collection surveys a century of Finnish music for the stage and screen. At its centre stands Sibelius's Scaramouche, a 1912 ballet-pantomime steeped in the era's fascination with the commedia dell'arte, erotic desire and the macabre - the same currents that produced Stravinsky's Petrushka and Schoenberg's Pierrot Lunaire. Around it are gathered Selim Palmgren's music for the fairy-tale play Tuhkimo and the Princess, Einar Englund's Jussi Award-winning soundtrack for the 1952 film Valkoinen peura (The White Reindeer), and Kalervo Tuukkanen's Christmas Suite. Together the programme reveals a lesser-known, theatrical side of Finnish orchestral music from the first half of the twentieth century.
