Violinist-violist Christine Wu explores how memory reshapes itself through works by Joan Tower, Kaija Saariaho, Jeffrey Mumford, Stravinsky and Weinberg, closing with Bach's Chaconne - each piece its own act of musical recollection.
Violinist-violist Christine Wu built this recital around the idea of memory - how each act of recollection subtly reshapes what is remembered. Joan Tower's virtuosic Wild Purple grows a single interval into wild rhythmic energy, while Kaija Saariaho's Nocturne, written in tribute to Witold Lutoslawski, draws on material from her violin concerto Graal theatre. Jeffrey Mumford's Eight Musings recasts fragments of his earlier chamber works for solo violin, and Stravinsky's Elegy and Weinberg's introspective Viola Sonata No. 2 - shaped by the composer's wartime losses - explore repetition and time from opposite emotional poles. The programme closes with Bach's Chaconne, whose single obsessively repeating harmonic progression becomes its own act of musical remembrance.
