This recording imagines how Marian Vespers might have sounded at the end of Monteverdi’s life, drawing on the great sacred “reservoirs” of the Selva morale e spirituale and the posthumous 1650 Messa a quattro voci e Salmi. Instead of repeating the famous 1610 cycle, it assembles the five prescribed psalms with motets and antiphons such as Ego flos campi, Stabat Virgo Maria, Salve Regina and the searing Pianto della Madonna, many of them spiritual reworkings of earlier madrigals and operatic laments. The result evokes both San Marco’s ceremonial brilliance and the more inward space of Santa Maria dei Frari, where the composer is buried. Concertato psalms with violins, cornetts and sackbuts stand beside stile antico polyphony and moments of plainchant, while the hymn Ave maris stella unfolds in alternation of chant and freely improvised counterpoint. Guided by a strong sense of rhetoric and liturgical flow, the performance reveals these pages as a true musical testament, where theatre, prayer and human vulnerability are held in a single luminous arc.
