Antonin Dvorak: Piano Trios 3 & 4
This album pairs two of Dvořák’s most personal chamber works, revealing the breadth of his emotional and stylistic world. The F minor trio, shaped in the aftermath of his mother’s death and in artistic dialogue with Brahms, opens in hushed unison and grows into a deeply shadowed sonata design whose shifting tonal centres and blurred borders between themes create a powerful sense of unrest. Its lyrical slow movement, with “dreamed” diatonic harmonies and folk-tinged melody, and the finale’s furiant-like drive – crowned by a triumphant coda that briefly recalls the first movement – trace a path from lament to hard-won assertion. By contrast, the E minor “Dumky” trio turns to the Slavic dumka tradition, six linked character pieces that alternate elegy and exuberant dance, coloured by recitative-like lines, bagpipe drones, pizzicati and skocná rhythms. The performers shape this mosaic with symphonic density, a homogeneous yet transparent sound and keen rhythmic flexibility, letting Dvořák’s mix of melancholy, fantasy and popular idiom speak with irresistible immediacy.
