The fourth volume of cpo's complete Cipriani Potter symphonies centres on the Symphony in G minor of 1832, a work Richard Wagner admired enough to conduct in London in May 1855, winning over both the composer and his audience. Written with the poise of Haydn and Beethoven yet free of slavish imitation, it shows why Potter deserves a place among the finest British orchestral music of his era. Alongside it stand the earlier Symphony in B flat major of 1821 and the Duo concertant for violin, piano and orchestra of 1827, a three-movement showpiece whose brilliance need not fear comparison with Weber, Hummel and other virtuoso contemporaries.
