This album invites the listener to rediscover Franz Anton Hoffmeister as one of the most imaginative voices of late-18th-century Vienna. The “La chasse” Symphony in D major wraps elegant classical architecture in brilliant hunting calls for horns, oboes and flute, the music pulsing with the excitement of the chase while retaining an easy, cantabile grace. By contrast, the F-major “La prima vera” Symphony breathes a gentler spring atmosphere: a poised slow introduction opens onto expansive, sunlit melodies, with delicate nature allusions – even a cuckoo – woven into the texture. Between them stands the E-major Concerto for two horns, a work of dazzling virtuosity originally written for a famed duo and heard here in its world-premiere recording. The interplay of the two soloists combines athletic brilliance with lyrical warmth, always firmly embedded in the transparent, stylish playing of the chamber orchestra under Johannes Moesus, who shapes the scores with a keen sense of classical proportion and colour.
