Franz Danzi: Flute Quintets op. 50
Catalog Number: 555770-2
Franz Danzi, prized by wind players for his generous output, brings the flute together with strings in his three Quintets, Op. 50 – music that gracefully bridges the gallant Classical style and the softer shadows of the early Romantic era.
The name of Franz Danzi, court conductor at Baden, stands high among wind players – unsurprisingly, given a catalogue that includes no fewer than nine works for wind quintet. A hard-working musician with a clear fondness for wind instruments, and the flute above all, he wrote three sets of works pairing it with two, three and four string players. Following the recent three Flute Trios, Op. 71, this release presents the three Quintets, Op. 50, which subtly bridge the outer reaches of the Classical period and the dawn of Romanticism: the E flat major quintet is a delightful, gallant piece, while the later B minor is cast in the soft shadows of a new era, its predominantly dance-like moods coloured by that change of light.
