This album traces Friedrich Gernsheim’s journey from Brahmsian ally to independent late-Romantic voice. The youthful Piano Concerto in C minor unfolds with expansive, Schumann- and Brahms-tinged gestures: a surging first movement, a gently rocking Larghetto that blossoms into passionate climaxes, and a brilliant rondo that turns hard-won struggle into triumphant C major. Decades later, the single-movement Cello Concerto in E minor speaks in a more rhapsodic, flexible language, binding fantasy-like episodes and an elegiac Larghetto into a seamless arc in which the soloist sings and storms against a darkly glowing orchestral backdrop. Zu einem Drama completes the portrait: a symphonic poem without explicit programme, moving from hushed woodwind narration to hymnic climaxes and an Andante amoroso that feels like a final, grateful farewell to Romanticism itself. Pianist and cellist, partnered by the Mainz Philharmonic under Hermann Bäumer, bring out both the structural clarity and the richly coloured emotional theatre of this rediscovered master.
