Gung'l: Sacred and Secular Works
Catalog Number: 777582-2
Josef Gung'l (1809–1889) was once hailed as the "Berliner Strauß" — a dance composer and orchestra pioneer largely forgotten today. The Nürnberger Symphoniker under Christian Simonis brings his irresistible marches, waltzes, and polkas brilliantly back to life.
Josef Gung'l (1809–1889) was born in Zsámbék, Hungary, and became one of the most celebrated dance composers and orchestra leaders of his era, dubbed the "Berliner Strauß" by contemporaries. A pioneer who introduced strings into military ensembles and composed over 436 works, he made entertainment concerts fashionable across Europe — from Berlin to St. Petersburg. This programme spans the full range of his dance output: sweeping waltzes like "Träume auf dem Ozean" and "Amorettentänze," spirited galops and polkas, a Csárdás evoking his Hungarian roots, and the stately "Franz-Joseph-Marsch." The Nürnberger Symphoniker under Christian Simonis — a Viennese-born conductor with a lifelong devotion to Gung'l's music since his Bad Reichenhall years — bring idiomatic warmth and vivacity to this long-overdue rediscovery.
