Brockes’s highly imagistic poetry, long favoured for its dramatic immediacy, becomes under Schuback’s hand a more concentrated and declamatory musical narrative, its sweeping scenes—Christ’s agony on the Mount of Olives, Peter’s remorse, Judas’s despair—shaped with striking harmonic colour and sharply etched affect.
