This recording explores a group of symphonies preserved in Darmstadt that capture Johann Stamitz in the crucial years when late Baroque rhetoric was yielding to Classical clarity. Scored predominantly for strings with occasional horns and supported by discreet continuo, the works follow the Italian overture pattern of fast–slow–fast, sometimes closing with an elegant Tempo di Menuetto rather than the later four-movement design. Terraced dynamics and simple, harmony-anchoring bass lines still recall an earlier age, yet the music already speaks with a new, personal tone: bold opening gestures, eloquent slow movements and buoyant finales point toward the concert symphony that would make Mannheim famous. The Southwest German Chamber Orchestra shapes this repertoire with transparency and rhythmic lift, allowing the emerging color, poise and expressive breadth of Stamitz’s early style to register in all its freshness.
