Here, stately dotted ritornellos and tender, sighing Adagios, rooted in the old ideal of moving the listener’s emotions, are answered by brilliant passagework, sparkling tirades and bravura cadenzas that push the soloists to the foreground. The traverso moves effortlessly from pastoral sweetness to almost operatic flair, while the harpsichord alternates between luminous cantabile lines and muscular, imperial gestures, sometimes evoking the drama of accompanied recitative. Performed on historical instruments, Ensemble Klingekunst shapes these first recordings with transparent textures, supple phrasing and a keen ear for colour, allowing Umstatt’s inventive writing to emerge as both historically revealing and immediately engaging.
