Richard Bartmuß: Organ Sonatas 1 & 3 - Chorale Fantasias
Catalog Number: 555788-2
A rare late-Romantic discovery: organist Friedhelm Flamme champions Richard Bartmuß (1859–1910), Dessau court organist and contemporary of Mahler and Strauss — two sonatas, two chorale fantasies, and the Prelude and Toccata from Op. 36.
Richard Bartmuß: Organ Sonatas 1 & 3 - Chorale Fantasias
Organist Friedhelm Flamme continues his wide-ranging explorations by turning from the North German Baroque to the late Romantic era and the neglected music of Richard Bartmuß (1859–1910). A contemporary of Mahler and Richard Strauss, Bartmuß served as court organist in Dessau from 1890, yet only a small part of his output has ever appeared in print. This programme draws together two of his four organ sonatas, two large-scale chorale fantasias, and the imposing Prelude and Toccata from Opus 36 — music of real dramatic sweep that makes a persuasive case for a composer long overdue for rediscovery.
