Barber & Glass: Violin Concertos - Zorn: Partita for the Firebird
Catalog Number: DE3638
Geneva Lewis's debut concerto album pairs Barber's soaring Violin Concerto with Glass's hypnotic First – and adds the very first recording of John Zorn's ferocious Partita for the Firebird. Gemma New conducts the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra.
Recorded soon after she moved to New York, violinist Geneva Lewis's first album brings together three works she holds especially close. Samuel Barber's lyrical 1939 concerto, with its notoriously breathless perpetuum mobile finale, sits beside Philip Glass's Violin Concerto No. 1 of 1987 – written with his father's love of the great violin concertos in mind, and built on driving repeated patterns, a central passacaglia and a dancing, syncopated finale. Between them comes the world-premiere recording of John Zorn's Partita for the Firebird (2022), a Baroque-framed work inspired by the 'Firebird' Stradivarius and full of nods to Stravinsky's ballet. Gemma New and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra are her partners.
