On Storytellers, the Colburn School's ensemble-in-residence Trio Azura explores three American piano trios united by narrative and vivid imagery. Jennifer Higdon paints with sound, evoking colours such as "Wondrous White" and "Brilliant Blue"; John Harbison's Piano Trio No. 2, "Short Stories", unfolds a series of miniature tales; and Charles Ives's boldly experimental trio breaks from Germanic Romantic tradition to forge a distinctly American voice. Recorded early in the group's career, the album showcases a partnership of striking intensity and imagination.
