Bohdan Riemer: Resonant Mirror
Catalog Number: DUX2203
Composer Bohdan Riemer, trained in both biology and music, built his own theory of symmetrical 'mirror structures.' Soprano Kornelia Wojnarowska and pianist Witold Kawalec perform his Romantic Resonant Mirror alongside piano miniatures and songs.
Polish composer Bohdan Riemer, trained in both biology and music theory, developed a personal theory of symmetrical twelve-note 'mirror structures' inspired by the ordered patterns he once studied as a scientist. The title work, Resonant Mirror (2009), applies these principles with striking consistency, yet surprises with the richness of its Romantic-tinged melodic and textural invention. The twelve miniatures of Interludes (2013-15) recall the great piano cycles of Debussy, Bartok and Hindemith, guiding the listener through contrasting moods from melancholic stillness to exuberant, almost monumental climaxes. A cycle of songs to poems by Maria Pawlikowska-Jasnorzewska completes the programme, performed by soprano Kornelia Wojnarowska with pianist Witold Kawalec, revealing a composer whose scientific rigor never eclipses his lyrical imagination.
