Mark Nowakowski: The Seven Last Words of Christ
Catalog Number: DUX2219
Mark Nowakowski's Seven Last Words of Christ, for baritone and orchestra, was recorded live in Stargard, Poland, and dedicated to a late friend and patron. Personal tragedy and faith run through this searching, deeply felt sacred triptych.
Composer Mark Nowakowski's setting of the Seven Last Words of Christ, scored for baritone, string orchestra, percussion and clarinet, was written for a single voice rather than a full choir, drawing the listener into the interiority of Christ's Passion rather than an operatic retelling. Recorded live in two churches in Stargard, Poland, with baritone Piotr Pieron and the Orkiestra Camerata Stargard under Kuba Wnuk, the work is dedicated to the memory of the orchestra's founder, Grzegorz Konopczynski. The album also includes O Mater Dolorosa!, born from a period of personal tragedy in the composer's life, its violent opening chords giving way to a searching, ultimately hopeful violin-led meditation. A third major choral work, premiered by conductor Szymon Wyrzykowski with Chamber Choir Omnia, completes a deeply personal, community-rooted project shaped by friendship, grief and faith.
