Missa Providentiae

Missa Providentiae
Footprint Records proudly presents the baroque mass Missa Providentiae (1728), composed by Antonia Caldara and Jan Dismas Zelenka. This beautiful music is performed by Maria Magdalena Vocal Ensemble and Baroque Ensemble (Stockholm), conducted by Mats Nilsson. This is the only known recording of this work. The soloists are taken from the members of the choir. Caldara (ca 1670-1736) was born in Venice and had a number of prominent positions as composer at various courts in Italy. Famously prolific, the bulk of Caldara’s output came from his two decades as Vice Court Kapellmeister in Vienna. Missa Providentiae is one example and was a 'Kyrie-Gloria' mass, common in the protestant liturgy. With Zelenka's (1679-1745) musical responsibilities at the Dresden court came a requirement to provide multiple settings of the Mass. The Catholic chapel required full Mass settings that followed the Roman rite (so-called ‘Missa Tota’) incorporating Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus and Angus Dei. Zelenka chose Caldara's Kyrie-Gloria as a suitable candidate, composed a Credo and completed the Mass with a Sanctus and Agnus Dei derived from Caldara's Kyrie and Gloria. It is well known that Johann Sebastia Bach listened to music by Caldara Zelenka. Themes from Missa Providentiae can be heard in Bach's later works, such as the B minor Mass. This album is concluded with a stand-alone Sanctus by Bach in D major (BWV238).
