Prokofiev — Villa-Lobos — Poulenc
Catalog Number: FUG868
Three composers, one shared love of classical clarity. Simone Menezes and the ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra bring Prokofiev's Classical Symphony and sinfoniettas by Villa-Lobos and Poulenc home to Vienna, the birthplace of the classical style.
In 1917, working independently of each other, Sergei Prokofiev in Russia and Heitor Villa-Lobos in Brazil both looked back to the Viennese classics: Prokofiev imagined how Haydn might write a symphony in the 20th century, while Villa-Lobos paid tribute to Mozart in his Sinfonietta No. 1, whose theme is drawn from the overture to The Marriage of Figaro. Francis Poulenc's Sinfonietta of 1947 represents a later, fully absorbed neoclassicism, moving swiftly between lyrical, almost sacred moments and playful, circus-like wit. Brazilian conductor Simone Menezes and the ORF Radio-Symphonieorchester Wien bring these works back to Vienna, highlighting their transparency, balance and sparkle. The contrast between Prokofiev's incisive brilliance, Villa-Lobos's warmer, more enveloping colours and Poulenc's kaleidoscopic contrasts makes for a fresh and illuminating program.
