The first volume of Concerto Copenhagen's series Tides of Scandinavian Baroque is devoted to Queen Christina of Sweden (1626–1689), who abdicated in 1654, converted to Catholicism and settled in Rome. There she became a central figure in the city's artistic life, helping to create the conditions in which composers could flourish and new genres could develop. The program follows her from Stockholm, with Swedish court dances by French composers and by Andreas Düben, to the Roman world of Stradella, Pasquini, Alessandro Scarlatti and Arcangelo Corelli, who dedicated his first published trio sonatas to Christina. Works by William Young and an instrumental version of Gesualdo's Moro, lasso complete a richly coloured portrait. Lars Ulrik Mortensen directs from the harpsichord and organ in this recording made in Copenhagen's Garrison Church in 2026.
