The new album “SHIRA” by Israeli singer Shira Karmon and flamenco guitarist Rainer Maria Nero—featuring songs in Hebrew, Sephardic, and Yiddish—bears witness to the multicultural atmosphere of medieval Spain and present-day Israel. In Hebrew, the word “Shira” embodies poetry, song, and melody, reminding us that verse and, above all, music hold a unique power to unite people across borders. With innovative arrangements by flamenco guitarist Rainer Maria Nero and the debut recording of Shira Karmon’s poem “Über Rachel” (set to music by Eyal Bat), this selection embarks on a musical journey spanning the Middle Ages to the present. The poems by poets like Ibn Gabirol, the poet Rachel and Ehud Manor, were set to music by some of the greatest composers from Israel like Matti Caspi, Achinoam Nini, Simon Laks, among others, and brilliantly reflect the Jewish soul in all its diversity.
